Is Variety The Spice of Life?
PROs and CONs
Let's start by talking about the pros and cons of each. Variety and Uniformity both have pros and cons that should be considered.
VARIETY IN EXERCISE
I've noticed it going around that some trainers have been really pushing the narrative that you should be doing the same exercises every week in a program. It's been covering my Instagram, and I kind of get it. If someone has a specific goal like building muscle or competing in any type of competition, it can be really beneficial to nail down a good routine and repeat. Because you'll be targeting the same exact muscles week after week, and you'll get very proficient in these movements. BUT I think sometimes this narrative can be counter-productive. If you don't have very specific goals, if you're goals are to be overall fitter and stronger and healthier, then I actually prefer a decent amount of variety. Finding ways to move your body that you LOVE (aerials, pole dancing, running, tennis, swimming, surfing, yoga, crossfit, etc). Trying new things (take a ballet class, try to learn handstands, go rock climbing). Learning new movements. It's great for your brain, your mind-body connection, your body awareness, and satisfies the desire to not feel stuck or bored. And physically, it makes your body more prepared and able to do new things quicker!
VARIETY IN NUTRITION
I would argue that variety in food is even more important than variety in exercise, and actually benefits everyone. Different foods have different nutrients, different vitamins and minerals, some have antioxidants, some have phytonutrients, some have specific amino acids. All the fancy words to say different foods have different benefits. If you have a tendency to eat the same exact thing every single day, you're likely missing out on a lot of specific nutrients. Yes, it can be easier mentally to just eat the same thing over and over, but it is far more beneficial to switch it up and eat many different foods. But there is space for compromise. For example, if you love eating oatmeal for breakfast, more power to you, but try switching up the flavours and garnishes. Use different fruits and seeds and nut butters to add some variety that way. Another easy way to start adding variety is to try to eat multiple colours every day!
